Vietnamese law firm - Law students good at learning by heart, weak at seeking solutions

VietNamNet Bridge – Law students are considered to be unable to adapt to the new circumstances in the period of global integration. And the bad university curriculum is the main reason behind this.

Lawyer Nguyen Huu Phuoc, Director of Phuoc & Partners Law Firm, said that he has to spend a lot of time to recruit the staff for his company.

“We don’t want the students that can read loudly and clearly the provisions of the laws and legal documents, we need the ones that can provide suitable solutions to settle the problems of our clients,” said Mr Phuoc, adding that it is very difficult to find suitable candidates.

Lawyer Chau Huy Quang said that Vietnamese students are very good in learning by heart, but very weak in analytical skill and in dealing with problems. Mr Quang called this a kind of ‘learning by rote’, and the result of this method of education is providing bad graduates.

A lot of law university graduates make spelling mistakes when compiling documents. “It is the taboo for legal firms, because clients may have doubts about the quality of the legal services they receive,” said Mr Quang.

Pham Nhat Minh from the Legal Division under Sacombank, one of the biggest banks in Vietnam, said that the demand for legal staffs is very high from banks and other sectors.

Mr Minh said that it is very difficult to look for qualified staffs for legal departments at this moment. “Our legal department always has the room for law students who come to practice working as legal officers. We will employ all those who can meet our requirements,” he said.

According to Pham Xuan Tu, who is a student of the Law University, law students all think that they will work at courts after the graduation, while not many of students decide that they will work for enterprises’ legal departments. Meanwhile, the demand for lawyers and legal consultants is very high from enterprises

Experts, scholars and entrepreneurs all have called on universities to change the teaching curriculum so as to provide students with necessary knowledge. The syllabus has been heavily criticized for backward knowledge. The Minister of Justice also admitted that the curriculum of law universities has not seen any big changes over the last 15 years.

Lawyer Nguyen Dang Trung from the Hanoi Bar Association, has reminded law students that they need to speak English well in the age of global integration. “The red carpet is being spread out to welcome the graduates who have good professional knowledge and foreign language skills,” he said.
